My daughter avoids flying at all costs, so when she was invited to attend a family wedding halfway across the country, she asked if I’d go with her. For the first leg of our journey, we travelled to Canmore, Alberta, where we stayed for almost a week.

Canmore was a small mining town in the middle of the Bow Valley. The upper Bow River passes through it. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Canmore has an old story that says the government saw more value in natural resources for nature enthusiasts than in minerals it could mine.
As nostalgic as the idea is, it hinged more on the lack of profits than sporting events. Over on 10th Street, take note of the metal plates underfoot inscribed with Katherine Govier’s poem Underground about the miners.

Look down.
There’s a world below,
dug out and timber-framed
mapped and named.
It’s tunnels stretch for miles
under the mountain
